Peter L Brewer J.D. Biography

Background

Peter is a registered patent attorney. He is a native of Texas and holds a degree in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University. He is one of only a few attorneys in the country who is both a registered patent attorney and a degreed petroleum engineer.

Peter attended law school in Texas. During law school he clerked for Shell Oil Company and for the prestigious Houston firm of Vinson & Elkins. Before attending law school he worked as a production engineer in the Permian Basin.

Early in his career Peter was selected to serve as a Briefing Attorney to the Supreme Court of Texas.  Before working for Thrive IP®, Peter worked in the intellectual property group of a large, full service law firm having 25 offices across the Southeast. He also formerly worked for a large national IP boutique in Houston, Texas where he wrote numerous patent applications for one of the world’s largest oilfield service companies, one of the country’s leading semiconductor equipment manufacturers, and an international tool company.

Peter provides a wide variety of transactional IP services for clients including patent work, trademark work, licensing agreements and corporate due diligence.  Much of Peter’s practice remains tied to the upstream oil and gas industry though he also provides services to doctors, hospitals and research foundations in the medical field.

Peter attends trade shows in the oil and gas industry, including the 2018 SPE Gulf Coast Section Entrepreneurs Conference and the 2018 Artificial Lift Workshop in Oklahoma, City. He speaks to SPE Groups in Texas, Kentucky and Oklahoma. He is proficient in conducting OnePetro technical searches for clients.  He also has experience assisting small businesses and start-up companies in contract matters, due diligence and IP protection. Of interest, he also represents two clients involved in the motivational speaking and life coaching field.

Peter has arranged for the filing of patent applications in numerous countries. Clients from the “oil patch” generally select a combination of Canada, Argentina, Norway, UK, Australia and China for foreign patent protection. Peter has also litigated matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Peter is a frequent speaker at CLE programs, SPE meetings and tennis conferences. He is involved in the Tennessee Intellectual Property Law Association as a Board member, and the Association of Intellectual Property Firms as a Committee member.
